Influence and Inspiration

My latest idea for a venture into the wonderful world of programming is the creation of a text based simulation game. Of all the projects I have undertaken, completed or not, this one is probably the biggest one. Games that have influenced and given me inspiration for this project are many and varied.

My first foray into the land of simulation was the classic Sim City. I was in the 7th grade. It was a computer technology class. Every two weeks or so we would change stations, each station offering a different technology. There was a lego station, a darkroom, a CAD station, and a Sim City station (among others).

My idea for a text based simulation has Sim City as its main influence. Due to the lack of graphics, though, my version will rely on other features not present in or a focus of typical city simulators.

Another favorite simulation genre is RTS, specifically the Age of Empires series. The biggest influence here will be the idea of technology and other items becoming available when a certain game level is achieved or a building is constructed.

So, for example, classes will be offered through the library, which will only be available itself once a school is constructed, and so forth. City ordinances will be enacted in the City Hall building. Technology research will be offered through a university. Each of these buildings will have levels themselves, each new level offering new things.

The look of my game will probably resemble the game Metropolis, which I play through Facebook. I have also started to play a game called Cyber Nations (, which has a similar structure.

I look forward to sharing more of my ideas with you. Your suggestions and criticisms are welcome, of course.

I remember I liked very much games like Sim City, games where you need to think to a strategy and many aspects are influenced by your moves. I also moved this passion to my son and he started to use mouse and keyboard when he was 3 years old exactly using SimCity 2000:

Yes, text sims ... I played quite a few on my older systems like the Amstrad CPC or the C64. HANSE or GUILDE they were called. And numerous sport managers too.

Here is a nice link that covers some of these games:
