My job, my passion

Rate this Entry
thinBasic programming language is my passion. After family, job and friends, there is only thinBasic.

But many of you have seen and noted my presence in thinBasic forum and my timing in releasing new thinBasic versions vanishing during recent months. It is not an impression but a reality. During some period of the year I have to give higher priority to my job but this will never touch my passion for developing thinBasic and very soon I will return to program thinBasic and release new versions at the same level of the recent past, maybe more.

The reasons of my "vanishing" are summarized below. I hope you understand why priority number one is job.

As I stated in some posts, I work for a company that makes 45 to 50% annual sales in 3 month: September, October, November. During those months company almost double its number of people (from 120 or so to more than 200), every department is squeezed like a lemon and till the end of the period we do not know if we will be able to get the figures we need to do because our customer orders enter on a daily basis without any possibility to make precise predictions.

The products we sell (cosmetics and beauty products) are 100% made inside the company: from the very first idea to shipping to customers is driven by us. We have laboratories (chemical and biological), we have production (quite massive), we have manufacturing (packaging), we have big warehouses, ... only transportation in done outside.

We have 5000 customers, 100 franchising shops whose systems are connected with the company in real time, we sell in more than 20 countries, we produce 15 millions of main products and 56 millions of gifts. Our legacy system manage around 300000 documents (orders, delivery notes, invoices) with more than 6 millions document lines per year.

In this company I'm the IT Manager and I work with a group of 8 nice and capable people. One of that people is Roberto Bianchi (some of you saw him here in forum) and another is Simone (another thinBasic user and very capable programmer). From this group we manage the full IT of the company, we support 100 franchise shops mentioned above and also support 60 sales agents all around the country in their daily business.

When I say "company" I do not think to an abstract object but I think to all the faces of my colleagues and to their families that are not visible but are real. So responsibility to conduct the company into the right direction is responsibility for all that faces.

That is the picture and that is the main reason why sometimes I'm not in the position to do all I would like to do for thinBasic and for the nice community we all together have built.

I think if it wasn't for real life we could all get on and do some real programming.

Thanks for sharing a little inside/outside of your nonThinbasic life.
